एक देश में एक धनी व्यापारी रहता था। उसके सात बेटे थे। उनमें से छः बेटे लम्बे-चौड़े और खूब हृष्ट-पुष्ट थे। लेकिन सबसे छोटा बेटा आधे शरीर का था। उसके एक हाथ था, एक पैर, एक आँख, एक कान, आधी नाक, और आधा सिर था। इसलिए सब उसे अधड़ा (अधूरा) कह कर पुकारते थे।
अधड़ा कद का छोटा था। उसकी आँख बिल्कुल छोटी-सी थी। जब वह कोई चीज देखता, तो अपनी आँख जल्दी-जल्दी घुमाता। उसका कान भी छोटा सा था, जब वह कुछ सुनने की कोशिश करता तो कान पर हाथ लगा लिया करता। ये सब तो था ही, उसकी चाल सबसे बढ़िया थी। एक टाँग से मुर्गे की तरह अकड-अकड़ कर चलता।
अधड़े की माँ उसे अपाहिज जान कर उसका सबसे अधिक ध्यान रखती। उसका लाड़-प्यार अधडे पर ही रहता। देखने वाले भी अधड़े को देख कर तरस खाते, पर सब भाई उसकी हँसी उड़ाते और नौकर-चाकर अकेले में चिढ़ाते।
अधड़ा उन सबकी शिकायत माँ से करता, तो उन्हें खूब डाँट पढ़ती। लाड़-प्यार से धीरे-धीरे अधडे का स्वभाव बिगड़ गया। वह सबसे अकड़ कर बोलता, कभी किसी की सहायता न करता और न किसी के दु ख-दर्द मे काम आता। वह घमडी भी हो गया, और अपने आपको बहुत चतुर समझने लगा।
धीर-धीरे अधड़ा बड़ा हुआ। अब उसे दुनिया देखने की इच्छा हुई। उसने अपनी इन्छा माँ से कही। माँ ने उसे बहुत समझाया कि बाहर जाकर बहुत कठिनाइयों उठानी पड़ती है। ओर तिस पर यह तो अधड़ा था, कहीं मुसीबत से पड़ गया, तो बचना भी मुश्किल।
मॉ के बहुत मना करने पर भी भला अधड़ा कहॉ रूकने वाला था। उसकी तो आदत थी कि जब कभी कोई धुन सवार हो जाती, तो अवश्य उस काम को करके छोडता।
जब अधड़ा किसी तरह नहीं माना तो मॉ ने उसके साथ कुछ जरूरी सामान रख दिया और चलते वक्त बोली-‘‘बेटा एक बात याद रखना-जो कोई तुमसे सहायता मांगे उसकी सहायता अवश्य करता और सबसे नरमी का बर्ताब करना। जाओ, भगवान
तुम्हारी रक्षा करे।’’ माँ की बात सुन कर अधड़ा घर से चल दिया।
अपने शहर से निकल कर अधड़ा एक जंगल में आ पहुँचा। वहॉ एक पेड की छाया में बैठ कर सुस्तान लगा। इतने से उसे कहीं से एक नन्हीं -सी आवाज सुनाई दी-‘मरी सहायता करो।’ अधडे ने अपनी छोटी-सी आँख घुमा-घुमा कर चारो और देखा और कान लगा कर सुना। यह आवाज पास बहते हुए झरने से आ रही थी।
झरना अधड़े से प्रार्थना करने लगा, बोला-‘‘महाशय, घास ओर पत्तियों ने प्रटक होकर मेरा रास्ता रोक दिया दे । मैं आगे बह नहीं सकता, दया करके मेरा रास्ता साफ कर दीजिये।’’
अधड़ा अकड कर बोला-‘‘हैं, मैं कोई तुम्हारा नौकर हूँ !, जो तुग्हारा कूड़ा करकट निकालूँ। सड़ते रहो, वहीं पड़े रहो। मुझे बहुत दूर जाना है।’’ यह कह कर वह अकड़ कर चल दिया।’’
आगे चल कर रास्ते में राख का ढेर मिला अधडे को एक नन्हीं-सी आवाज सुनाई दी- ‘‘मेरी सहायता करो।’’
अधड़े ने अपनी छोटी- सी ऑख घुमा-घुमा कर चारो तरफ देखा और कान लगा कर सुना। यह आवाज राख के ढेर में से आ रही थी। राख का ढेर अधड़े से प्रार्थना करने लगा, बोलो- महाशय मेरे ऊपर थोडी-सी घास डाल दो मैं बुझती जा रही हूँ।
अधड़ा बोला ; पड़ी बुझती रहो। मुझे बहुत दूर जाना है।’’ यह कह कर मुर्गे की तरह अकड़ कर वह आगे बढा।
चलते-चलते कुछ झाड़िया मिली। अधड़े को फिर एक नन्ही-सी आवाज आई- ‘‘मेरी सहायता करो।’’ उसने अपनी छोटी-सी आँख घुमा-घुमा कर चारों तरफ देखा और कान लगा कर सुना। झाड़ियों में से हवा अधड़े से गिड़गिढ़ा कर प्रार्थना करने लगी, बोली-‘‘महाशय, कृपा करके मुझे इन झाड़ियों में से निकाल दीजिये, में यहाँ फँसी पड़ी हूँ। यहाँ से छुटकारा पाऊँ तो आसमान की सैर करूँ।’’
अधड़े ने अकड़ कर कहा-‘‘मैं कोई धौकनी हैँ, जो तुम्हें फूक मार कर वहाँ से छुड़ा दूँ। वहीं बँधी पड़ी रहो, मुझे बहुत दूर जाना है।’’ यह कह कर अधड़ा मुर्गे की तरह अकड़ता हुआ फिर आगे को बढ़ा।
जंगल पार करके अधड़ा एक शहर में आ पहुँचा। शहर में वह जहाँ भी जाता उसे सब आँख फाड़-फाड़ कर देखते। एक दूसरे को दिखा कर कहते ‘‘अरे देख। क्या अजब जानवर है। हमने तो आज तक कभी ऐसा देखा ही नहीं। न जाने कौन से देश से आया है।’’ ओर जब अधड़ा अकड़ कर आगे बढ़ जाता, तो लोग खूब हँसते, बच्चे तालियाँ पीटते। वह किसी की परवाह न करता हुआ सारे शहर में घूम आया।
वहाँ उसे कहीं ठहरने की जगह न मिली। थक कर एक पेड़ के नीचे सो गया। जाड़े का मौसम था, और उसके पास ओढ़ने लायक कोई कपडा भी नहीं था। रात को उसे सपने मे झाड़ियों में फॅसी हुई हवा दिखाई दी। वह कह रही थी-‘‘उस दिन तुमने मेरी सहायता नहीं की। अब मेरी ताकत देखना।’’ रात भर ठंडी हवा चलती रही और अधड़ा वहीं पढ़ा हुआ हवा के थपेड़े खाता रहा।
वह जाड़े के मारे मुर्गा बना पड़ा रहा सूरज निकलने पर वह जागा तो उसने अपने को सचमुच का मुर्गा बना पाया। अधड़ा मुर्गा होकर भी आधा ही रहा। वही एक आँख, आधा सर आधा पेट और एक टांग। बेचाराबड़ा दुःखी हुआ।
फुदकता-फुदकता शहर की तरफ दाने की तालश में निकला ।
चलता-चलता राजा के मुर्गीखाने में जा पहुँचा और लगा जोर से बाग लगाने। वेवक्त की बाग सुनकर सब मुर्ग-मुर्गी उसकी तरफ देखने लगे और घेर कर खडे हो गये।
अधडे ने सबको अपने चारों ओर देखा तो शान के मारे अकड़ गया। और कुड़क-कुड़क करता हुआ दाना चुगने लगा।
तभी राजा का रसोईया मुर्गी लेने आया। उसकी निगाह अधड़े पर पड़ी बस उसने उसे टांग पकड़ कर उठा लिया ओर रसोई सें ले जा कर पानी के बर्तन मे डाल दिया।
वर्तन आग पर रख दिया। अधड़ा पानी से गिड़गिड़ा कर कहने लगा-‘‘मुझे दया करके बाहर निकाल दो, नहीं तो में मर जाऊॅगा।’’
पानी हँस कर बोला-‘‘क्या तुम घास और पत्तियों से अटके हुए पानी के झरने को भूल गये ? मैं वही हूँ। तुमने मेरी जैसी मदद की थी, वेसे ही में तुम्हारी मदद करूँगा।’’ अधड़ा अपना सा मुॅह लेकर रह गया।
धीरे-धीरे पानी गरम होने लगा और अधड़ा झुलसने लगा। तब वह आग से गिड़गिड़ा कर बोला-‘‘मुझ पर दया करो। तुम अपनी लपटे नीची रखो, नहीं तो पानी गरम होकर मुझे मार डालेगा।’’
आग बड़ी जोर से हँसी, बोली-‘‘क्या तुम राख के ढेर से दबी आग को भूल गये, जब उसने तुमसे गिड़गिड़ा कर सहायता मॉगी थी, तुमने कुछ किया था? मैं वही आग हूँ। अब तुम यहीं जल कर मरो।’’ यह कह कर आग अपनी लपटे ऊँची करके
जलने लगी।
अब तो अधड़े की जान पर बन आई। उसने बहुत हाथ-पैर मारे और बर्तन का ढकना हटा लिया, फुदक कर बाहर आया और खिड़की में जा बैठा। इतने ही मे बडे जोर की हवा चली और गोले अधड़े को ऊपर उड़ा कर ले गई।
अधड़ा नीचे आने की कोशिश करता और हवा उसे ऊपर उठाती हुई उसे आसमान में बहुत ऊँचाई पर ले गई ओर वहॉ से उसे एक दम नीचे पटक दिया। अधड़ा एक ऊचे बुर्ज पर लगी हुई लोहे की कील पर आकर अटक गया। वहाँ से वह लाख कोशिश करने पर भी अपने को न छुड़ा सका और अब वह वहाँ पर अभी तक अटका हुआ है। हवा उसे खूब नचाया करती है। लोग कहते हैं कि वह हवा की दिशा बताने वाला यन्त्र है।

The fire laughed out loud, said - "Have you forgotten the fire buried under the pile of ashes, when it begged you for help, did you do anything?" I am that fire. Now you burn here and die.
Started burning
Now the life of the half has become. He beat his hands and feet a lot and removed the cover of the pot, came out jumping and went to the window. Just then, a strong wind blew and carried away the shell half-way up.
Half-heartedly trying to come down, the wind lifted him up and took him very high in the sky and threw him down from there. The half got stuck on an iron nail fixed on a high tower. He could not free himself from there even after trying a million times and now he is still stuck there. The wind makes him dance a lot. People say that it is a wind teller.
