संतरे वाली राजकुमारी

किसी देश में एक बहुत बड़ा जंगल था। उस जंगल के बीचों-बीच एक संतरे का पेड़ था। उस पेड़ के नीचे एक संतरी पहरा दिया करता था। एक दिन दो शिकारी राजकुमार शिकार करते हुए उधर आ निकले। संतरे के पेड़ के नीचे खड़े उस संतरी को देख उन्हें बड़ा अचम्भा हुआ। कुछ देर तो वह दूर से खड़े उस संतरी की ओर देखते रहे, पर वह कुछ समझ न सके। फिर आपस में कुछ सलाह करके वह आगे बढ़े और संतरी के निकट जाकर पूछा-‘‘संतरी जी आप क्यों उस सतरे के पेड़ के नीचे पहरा दे रहे दो?

संतरी यह सुन हँस पडा और फिर कुछ देर बाद बोला -‘‘भाई तुम्हें इन बातों से क्या लेना है? अपना काम-धन्धा देखो।’’

यह सुन शिकारी ओर भी हैरान हुए और सोचने लगे कि ‘ऐसी क्या बात है जो संतरी बताना नहीं चाहता।’ उन्होंने फिर आग्रह से पूछा – ‘‘संतरी जी, हम तुम्हारे यहाँ पहरा देने का कारण जाने बिना यहाँ से नहीं जायेंगे।’’

संतरी बोला, “कारण बताने में मुझे कोई आपत्ति नहीं है, पर तुम्हें जान कर केवल दुःख के और कुछ न प्राप्त होगा, इसीलिए में नहीं बताना चाहता।’’
बड़ा राजकुमार बोला, ‘‘हम किसी प्रकार के दु.ख अथवा संकट से नहीं घबराते, हम हर प्रकार के संकट का मुकाबला करेंगे और दु.ख भोगने को तैयार हैं।’’

छोटा राजकुमार अपने बड़े भाई से बोला, ‘‘भैया, चलो घर चले, न जाने क्या मुसीबत आ जाएगी। यहाँ जंगल में तो कोई सहायक भी नहीं मिलेगा।’’

बडा भाई बोला – ‘‘डरने की क्या बात है। हम तो राजपूत हैं। यदि तुम्हे डर लगता है तो तुम सहर्ष घर लौट जाओ। में तो सारी बात की खोज करके ही चैन लूगा।’’

छोटा भाई बोला -‘‘ना भाई, में तुम्हें यहाँ अकेला छोड़ कर नहीं जाऊँगा। अकेला में पिता जी को क्या मुॅह दिखाऊँगा जैसा तुम कहो वैसे ही मैं करूँगा।’’

संतरी बोला, ‘‘तो तुम लोग नहीं मानोगे कारण जाने बगैर। अच्छा, तो जैसे भगवान की इच्छा। लो, बैठ जाओ उस पत्थर पर और ध्यान से सुनो।’’
इतना कह, वह संतरी भी वहीं एक पत्थर पर बैठ गया और कुछ देर सोच कर सिर खुजलाते हुए उसने कहना आरम्म किया-
‘‘इस संतरे के पेड़ का तना खोखला है। इसमें उतर कर अन्दर बड़ा सुन्दर, हीरे-जवाहरात से चमकता हुआ एक महल है जिसमे एक राजकुमारी रहती है। उस राजकुमारी के बराबर की सुन्दरी इस संसार में और कोई दूसरी नहीं है। वह राजकुमारी महीने में एक बार अपनी सखियों के साथ बाहर जंगल में घूमने निकलती है ।

पूर्णमासी की अर्धरात्रि को यहाँ जंगल में मंगल हो जाता है । बस, सवेरा होने से पहले ही राजकुमारी और उसकी मंडली वापस अपने महल मे चली जाती है। में यहाँ उसी राजकुमारी के महल की रखवाली करता हूँ।

इस तने के भीतर महल के चारों ओर भी पहरेदार हैं। यहाँ अनेक राजकुमार आ चुके हैं ओर राजकुमारी से विवाह करने की इच्छा मन में लिए हुए ही मौत के मुँह में चले गए हैं। उनकी दशा देखकर मुझे बहुत दया आती थी, पर वह भी तुम्हारी तरह जिद्दी थे। मेरे लाख मना करने पर भी वह नहीं माने।’’

बडा शिकारी बोला, ‘‘भाई संतरी, मैं भी इस राजकुमारी को देखना अवश्य चाहता हूँः भला ऐसी भी क्या बात है जो इतने लोग इसके पीछे अपने प्राणों से हाथ धो बैठे हैं।’’

संतरी ने बहुत समझाया-बुझाया, पर जब वह नहीं माने तो उसने कहा, ‘‘अच्छा, पृर्णमासी की रात्रि को यहाँ आकर किसी झाड़ी मे छुप कर बैठ जाना। जब अर्धरात्रि को राजकुमारी ओर उसकी सखियों बाहर निकले तो उसे देख लेना। परन्तु याद रखना कि बिलकुल चुपचाप बेठना होगा, जरा भी आवाज आने पर खैर न होगी।’’

संतरी की बात सुन दोनों शिकारी राजकुमार अति प्रसन्न हुए, और पृर्णमासी की रात्रि को फिर से वहॉ आने की ठान वहॉ से अपने घर लौट गए।

जसे-तैसे पूणमासी की प्रतीक्षा की और समय आने पर अपने पिता की आज्ञा ले दोनों राजकुमार शिकार को चल दिये। जंगल में पहुँच कर दिन भर विश्राम किया और रात्रि पढ़ने पर संतरे के पेड़ के निकट एक झाड़ी में जा छुपे।

आधी रात होने पर तने की खोल मे थोड़ा प्रकाश दिखाई दिया। फिर एक अत्यन्त सुन्दर लडकी धीरे से बाहर निकली।

चारों ओर देख कर फिर अंदर चली गई। पॉच-दस मिनट के बाद आठ-दस लड़कियाँ बाहर निकली। सब की सब बड़ी सुन्दर थीं। फिए राजकुमारी धीरे-धीरे बाहर आई।
उसके बाहर आते हीं चन्द्रमा ने भी अपना मुख एक बादल की टुकडी में छुपा लिया।

राजकुमारी की सुन्दरता देख दोनों राजकुमार होश खोबैठे। उन्हे ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ जैसे वे एक अद्भुत स्वप्न देख रहे हों।

राजकुमारी और उसकी सखियाँ बड़ी देर तक वहाँ गाती-बजाती, नाचती और आँखमिचौनी खेलती रहीं, फिर घूम-फिर कर सबेरा होने से पहले ही सब वापस अपने महल में चली गई।

बड़े राजकुमार ने उनका पीछा करना चाहा, पर छोटे राजकुमार ने ज्यों-त्यों उसे रोक लिया।

प्रातः संतरी को देखते ही बडे राजकुमार ने राजकुमारी के महल में जाने को इच्छा प्रकट की, पर संतरी ने सिर हिला दिया और कहा-

‘‘वहॉ पहुँचना असम्भव है. राजकुमारी के ऊपर किसी ने जादू किया है, इसलिए उसके पास कोई नहीं जा सकता।

हाँ, एक विधि है, जो कोई इस संतरे के पेड़ पर से दो फूल ला सकेगा वही व्यक्ति राजकुमारी के महल में जा सकेगा। परन्तु संतरे के पेड़ को छूना मना है ओर जमीन पर पडे फूल हाथ उठाने से भी काम नहीं चलेगा।

पेड़ पर लगे फूल हाथ से तोड़ना भी मना है। अब सोच लो, अगले महीने इस पेड़ पर फूल आएंगे।

सुनकर दोनों राजकुमार घर चले गए।

अगले महीने, दोनों राजकुमार शिकार का बहाना बना कर फिर उसी जंगल में पहुँचे । वे बड़े असमंजस में थे कि हाथ लगाए बिना संतरे के पेड़ से फूल कैसे तोड़े जाएँ।

तीन दिन और रात वे प्रयत्न करते रहे, पर फूल हाथ न लगे। रात को थक कर उसी पेड़ के नीचे बैठे कर विचार करने लगे।

चौथे दिन बडे बेग से हवा चलने लगी ओर पेड़ पर से फूल जमीन पर गिरने लगे। यह देख बड़ा राजकुमार उठा और उसने दो फूल जमीन पर गिरने से पहले ही पकड़ लिए। एक फूल छोटे राजकुमार के हाथ भी गया।

संतरी ने बडे़ आदर-प्रेम से उन्हे नीचे महल में पहुंच दिया। वहाँ घूमधाम से बड़े राजकुमार का विवाह संतरे की राजकुमारी के साथ हो गया ओर छोटे राजकुमार का राजकुसारी की सबसे प्यारी सखी के साथ।

दोनों राजकुमार अपनी-अपली पत्नी को साथ ले अपने पिता को प्रणाम करने पहुँचे, ओर उसका आशीर्वाद लिया। सारी राजधानी में बड़ी खुशी मनाई गई।

बढ़ा राजकुमार तो पिता के साथ राज-काज सँभालने लगा और छोटा राजकुमार संतरे के महल में रहने लगा।

 There was a huge forest in some country.  There was an orange tree in the middle of that forest.  A sentry used to guard under that tree.  One day two hunter princes came there while hunting.  He was very surprised to see that orange standing under the orange tree.  For some time he kept looking at the sentry standing from a distance, but he could not understand anything.  Then, after some consultation among themselves, they went ahead and went near the sentry and asked - "Sentry ji, why are you keeping guard under that satra tree?"

 The sentry laughed hearing this and then after some time said - "Brother, what do you have to do with these things?"  Watch your business.

 The hunters were even more surprised to hear this and started thinking that 'what is the matter that the sentry does not want to tell.'

 The sentry said, "I have no objection to telling the reason, but knowing you will not get anything other than sorrow, that's why I do not want to tell."
 The elder prince said, "We are not afraid of any kind of sorrow or trouble, we will face every kind of trouble and are ready to suffer."

 The younger prince said to his elder brother, "Brother, let's go home, don't know what trouble will come."  You won't even find any helper here in the forest.

 Elder brother said – “What is there to be afraid of.  We are Rajputs.  If you are afraid, you are happy to return home.  I will be at peace only after discovering the whole thing.

 

Younger brother said - "No brother, I will not leave you here alone."  What face will I show to my father alone, I will do as you say.

 The sentry said, "So you people will not believe without knowing the reason."  Well, then as the will of God.  Come, sit on that stone and listen carefully.

 Saying this much, the sentry also sat there on a stone and after thinking for some time, scratching his head, he began to say-
 "The trunk of this orange tree is hollow.  After descending into it, there is a very beautiful palace shining with diamonds and jewels, in which a princess lives.  There is no other beauty equal to that princess in this world.  That princess goes out once a month with her friends for a walk in the forest.

 It becomes auspicious here in the forest on the midnight of the full moon.  Just before dawn, the princess and her retinue go back to their palace.  Here I guard the palace of the same princess. 

There are also guards around the palace within this trunk.  Many princes have come here and have gone to death with the desire to marry the princess.  I was very sorry to see his condition, but he was also stubborn like you.  He did not agree even after I refused lakhs.

 The big hunter said, "Brother sentry, I also want to see this princess; what is the matter that so many people have lost their lives for her."

 The sentry persuaded a lot, but when he did not agree, he said, "Okay, come here on the full moon night and sit hiding in a bush."  Look at the princess and her friends when they come out at midnight.  But remember that you have to sit completely quietly, it will not be good if there is even a sound.

 Both the hunter princes were very happy after listening to the sentry, and returned to their home from there determined to come there again on the night of full moon.

Somehow they waited for the full moon and when the time came, both the princes went hunting after taking permission from their father.  After reaching the forest, he rested for the whole day and after studying at night, he hid in a bush near an orange tree.

 At midnight, a little light appeared in the shell of the stem.  Then a very beautiful girl came out slowly.

 After looking around she went inside again.  After five-ten minutes eight-ten girls came out.  Everyone was very beautiful.  Phi Princess slowly came out.
 As soon as he came out, even the moon hid its face in a piece of cloud.

 Seeing the beauty of the princess, both the princes lost consciousness.  He felt as if he was seeing a wonderful dream.

 The princess and her friends kept on singing, dancing and playing hide and seek there for a long time, then they went back to their palace before dawn.

The elder prince wanted to follow them, but the younger prince stopped him as soon as he could.

 Seeing the sentry in the morning, the elder prince expressed his desire to go to the palace of the princess, but the sentry shook his head and said-

 It is impossible to reach there.  Someone has cast a spell on the princess, so no one can go near her.

 Yes, there is a method, whoever can bring two flowers from this orange tree, that person can go to the palace of the princess.  But it is forbidden to touch the orange tree and even lifting the flowers lying on the ground will not work.

 It is also forbidden to pluck the flowers on the tree by hand.  Now imagine, next month flowers will come on this tree.

 Hearing this, both the princes went home.

 Next month, both the princes again reached the same forest on the pretext of hunting.  They were in great confusion as to how to pluck flowers from the orange tree without touching it.

 They kept trying for three days and nights, but could not get flowers.  Tired at night, sitting under the same tree, started thinking.

 On the fourth day, the wind started blowing with a big bag and flowers started falling from the tree to the ground.  Seeing this the elder prince got up and caught the two flowers before they fell to the ground.  A flower also went to the little prince.

 The sentry took him down to the palace with great respect and love.  There the elder prince from Ghumdham was married to the orange princess and the younger prince to the princess's dearest friend.

 Both the princes took their wives along with them to pay obeisance to their father and took his blessings.  There was great rejoicing in the entire capital.

 The elder prince started managing the affairs with his father and the younger prince started living in the orange palace.
