Terai folk tale :- “तीन भाई और जादुई परी”, ("The Three Brothers and the Magic Fairy")
किसी गाँव में तीन भाई रहते थे। वे इतने गरीब थे कि उनके पास अपना कहने के लिए सिवाय एक नाशपाती के पेड़ के सिवाए और कुछ नहीं था। वे जिस छोटी-सी झोपडी में रहते थे, उसी के पास वह नाशपाती का पेड़ खड़ा था।
उन्हें उस नाशपाती के पेड़ से बहुत प्रेम था। जब नाशपाती गदराने लगती थी, तो वे उस पर बारी-बारी से पहरा देते थे।
एक न एक भाई देर समय नाशपाती के पेड़ के पास डटा रहता था। जिस समय एक भाई पहरे पर होता था, उस समय बाफी दो भाई खेतों में काम करने जाते थे। पर अधिक-से-अधिक काम करने पर भी वे किसी तरह अपना पेट न पाल पाते थे, यहाँ तक कि पहनने के लिए ढंग के कपड़े भी नहीं मिलते थे।
एक दिच एक दयालु परी उस रास्ते से निकली। उसने देखा कि ये तीन लड़के कितने अच्छे हैं, फिर भी इनके पास खाने के लिए कोई अच्छी चीज नहीं है, ये बहुत गरीब हैं। इस पर परी के मन में दया आ गई, और वह सोचने लगी कि किसी प्रकार इन लडकों की सहायता करनी चादिए।
बहुत सोचने पर उसके दिमाग में एक योजना आई। वह भेष बदल कर एक भिखमंगिन बन गई, और लगड़ाती हुई नाशपाती के पेड़ के पास पहुँची। जब वह वहाँ पहुँची, तो उस समय सबसे बड़ा भाई पेड़ पर पहरा दे रहा था।
भिखमंगिन ने कहा-‘‘मुझे कुछ नाशपाती मिल जायें।’’
लड़के ने फौरन कुछ नाशपातियाँ तोढ़ीं, और कहा-‘‘तुम मेरे हिस्से की सब नाशपातियाँ ले लो। मैं तुम्हें इससे अधिक नहीं दे सकता क्योंकि बाकी नाशपाती मेरे भाइयों की हैं।’’
भिखमंगिन ने नाशपाती ले लीं, ओर बडे भाई को आशीर्वाद देकर वहाँ से चली गई।
अगले दिन संभला भाई पेड़ के पहरे पर था। दयालु परी भिखमगिन के रूप से फिर आई, और उसने उसी प्रकार से कुछ नाशपाती माँगी। सभले भाई ने अपने हिस्से की सारी नाशपातियाँ उस बुढ़िया को दे दीं। वह तो और भी देने के लिए तैयार था, पर छोटे भाई के हिस्से में वह हाथ लगाना उचित नहीं समझता था।
उससे अगले दिन तीसरे भाई के पहरे की बारी आई। दयालु परी उसी प्रकार भिखमंगिन के भेष से आई, ओर उसने छोटे भाई से नाशपाती मांगी। छोटे भाई ने बाकी सब नाशपातियों दे दीं, इस प्रकार पेड़ में एक भी लाशपाती न रह गई।
अगले दिन प्रातःकाल तीनों लड़के खेत पर जाने की तैयारी में व्यस्त थे कि इतने में वह दयालु परी अपने असली रूप में उनके जंगले पर उड़ कर बंठ गई ओर बोली- ‘‘लड़को, मैंने तुम तीनों की परीक्षा ली, और मेंने यह देखा कि जहॉ तक दयालु होने की बात है तुम मे से कोई किसी से कम नहीं। मैं तुम लोगो पर प्रसन्न हूँ । अब तुम लोग मेरे साथ आओ, और में तुम्हे यह बताऊँगी कि किस प्रकार तुम अच्छा खाना और कपड़े पा सकते हो ?’’
तीनों भाई उसके पीछे हो लिये । दयालु परी उन्हे एक जंगल में ले गई। उस जंगल में पेड़ इतने घने थे कि सूर्य की किरणें भी कभी जमीन पर नहीं पहुँच पाती थीं। परी उन्हें कभी पहाड़ पर चढ़ाती तो कभी घाटियों से ले जाती रही, ओर अन्त में वे एक बहुत बढ़ी नदी के पास पहुँच गये, जो पहाड़ से उछलती-कूदती हुई मैदानों की ओर जा रही थी।
जब सब लोग यहाँ आ गये तो परी खड़ी हो गई और उसने बोलना शुरू किया। पर नदी के स्त्रोत से इतनी आवाज आ रही थी कि उसकी एक भी बात किसी को सुनाई नहीं पड़ी, और उसने हर एक के पास जाकर उसके कान से अपनी बात कही।
बडे लड़के से वह बोली-‘‘यहॉ पर में तुम्हें जो तुम मांगोगे वह दूॅगी। इसलिए कोई वर मॉग लो।’’
बड़ा भाई उस समय प्यास के मारे परेशान हो रहा था, उसने बिना कुछ सोचे-उससे कह दिया-मैं यह चाहता हूँ कि यह पूरी नदी शर्बत बन जाय, और यह मेरी हो।’’
परी ने अपनी जादू की लकड़ी घुमाई, ओर वह पहाड़ी नदी झागदार श्वेत जल-राशि से बदल कर लाल शर्बत के रूप में हो गईं। जब ऐसा हो गया तो परी बोली- ‘‘तुमने जो मॉगा वह पूरा हो गया, अब इतनी बात याद रखना कि तुम इसका अच्छा
इस्तेमाल करना।’’
बड़ा भाई वही रह गया। परी छोटे दोनों भाइयों की एक हरे-भरे खेत के सामने ले गई। उस खेत के पास एक घासवाला मैदान था और उसमे सैकड़ों फाख्ते थे। वह फसले बीज औश्र कीडे खोजने से व्यरत थे। दयालु परी ने संमले भाई से कहा-‘‘अब तुम कोई वर मॉग लो, पर सोच-समझ कर मॉगना।’’
सभले भाई ने थोड़ी देर तक सोच कर कहा-‘‘मैं यह चाहता हूॅ कि में एक अच्छा किसान बन जाऊं, इसलिए आप इन फसलों को भेट बना दें और में उनका मालिक हो जाऊ।’’
दयालु परी ने जादू की लकड़ी घुसाई, ओर यह देखा गया कि वहाँ पर फाख्तों के बजाय भेड़ें चर रही हैं। परी बोली-‘‘वह देखो, वह सामने वाल खेत तुम्हारा है, ये भेड़ें भी तुम्हारी हैं। यदि तुम चाहो तो एक अच्छे किसान बन सकते हो, ओर तुम्हें किसी बात की कमी नहीं रहेगी । अपना भविष्य बनाना या बिगाड़ना, यह तुम्हारे ही हाथ में है।’’
इसके बाद परी सबसे छोटे भाई को लेकर पहाड़ों की ओर चली। जब वह एक पहाड़ के नीचे पहुँच गई, तो उसने छोटे भाई से पूछा- ‘‘तुम्हारे मन में क्या इच्छा है? जो वर चाहो मॉग लो।’’
छोटे भाई ने फौरन उत्तर नहीं दिया। वह बडी देर तक सोचता रहा, फिर अन्त में बोला-‘‘में एक सुन्दर-सी राजकुमारी चाहता हूँ, जिससे में शादी कर सकू ।’’
इस पर वह परी मुस्कराई। बोली-‘‘तुम जो मॉग रहे हो, वह बहुत मुश्किल है, फिर भी मेरे साथ आओ, देखूँ कि क्या किया जा सकता है।’’
बहुत दिनों तक परी उस लड़के को अपने साथ लेकर घूमती रही। ऐसे कई दिन बीत गये। अन्त में वे एक शहर में आये जहॉ एक बडा राजा रहता था। परी सीधे ही राजमहल में गई और बोली-‘‘क्या में राजकुमारी से मिल सकती हूँ ? मैंने सुना है कि
राजकुमारी बहुत अच्छी और सुन्दर है, अब यह देखना है कि वह है कैसी ?’’
परी को आज्ञा मिल गई, पर छोटा भाई मन ही मन घबड़ा रहा था कि मैं एक बहुत ही साधारण व्यक्ति हूँ, भला मेरी शादी एक राजकुमारी से कैसे हो सकती है। परी ने यह उसने बिना कुछ सोचे-समझे कह दिया।
परी ने ताड़ लिया कि वह लड़का क्या सोच रहा है। वह उसका ढाढ़स बढ़ाती रही। इतने में वे राजमहल के बड़े दालान के अन्दर आ गये।
जब वे वहाँ पर पहुँचे, तो उन्होंने देखा कि उनसे पहले से बहुत से दूसरे लोग राजकुमारी से शादी करने की उम्मीदवारी में बैठे हैं। मालूम पड़ा कि इनमें से दो तो विशेष उम्मीदवार हैं।
सामने ही वह सारा उपहार और सौगाते रखी हुई थीं, जो दूल्हे ले आये थे। परी ने उन चीजों के बगल में बेरो की वह टोकरी रख दी जिसे वे रास्ते में बटोर कर लाये थे।
छोटे भाई ने परी को जब ऐसा करते हुए देखा, उसे बढ़ी शर्म आई और उसने उसे ऐसा करने से रोकना चाहा। उसने मन में यह सोचा कि यह लोग तो हीरा, सोना, चॉदी और न मालूम क्या-क्या लाये हैं, इनके बगल में बेरों की यह टोकरी होगी, तो
उससे काम तो कुछ बनेगा नहीं, केवल हँसी ही होगी। पर इस बात पर परी मुस्कराती रही, और मना करने पर भी उसने बेरों की टोकरी वहीं पर रहने दी।
इसके बाद ही दालान के लोगों में कुछ चहल-पहल-सी मालूम पड़ी, सब के सब खड़े हो गये क्योंकि राजा इस समय राजकुमारी के साथ उस दालान में प्रवेश कर रहे थे। उनके लिए एक किनारे पर एक सिंहासन रखा हुआ था, वे उसी में जाकर बैठ गये। जब वे बेठ गये तो तीनों उम्मीदवार सिर नीचा करके खड़े हो गये।
राजकुमारी ने जल्दी ही इस बात को ताढ़ लिया कि यद्यपि छोटा भाई फटे कपड़ों में था फिर भी वह देखने मे दूसरे उम्मीदवारों से अधिक सुन्दर मालूम होता था, और वह स्वभाव से भी अच्छा जान पड़ता था। दो उस्मीदवारों मे से एक अधेड़ ओर मोटा था, तथा दूसरा लम्बा और दुबला था। राजकुमारी को वे दोनों पसन्द नहीं आये। उसने अपने पिता से कहा कि वह उस फटे कपड़े वाले नौजवान से शादी करना पसन्द करेगी, पर राजा की यह इच्छा थी कि राजकुमारी बाकी उम्मीदवारों में से किसी से शादी करे क्योंकि वे सब बहुत धनी थे। पर राजा को साथ ही साथ अपनी लड़की का बहुत ख्याल था, इसलिए वह उसे दुःखी नहीं करना चादते थे। राजा ने सोचा भला यह कैसे पता लगे कि इनमें से कौन सब से अच्छा है ?
जब परी ने यह देखा कि राजा उधेड़वुन में पड़ा हुआ है, तो वह आगे बढ़ आई, बोली-‘‘महाराज! आप इस प्रकार से यह मामला तय करें। आप तीन अंगूर की नयी वेल इन तीनों को अपने महल में लगाने को दें। जिसकी वेल में लगाने के तीन दिन के अन्दर ही फल आ जावे, उसी से आप अपनी लड़की की शादी कर दें।’’
राजा ने मन ही मन सोचा कि यह तरीका अच्छा रहेगा क्योंकि न तो तीन दिन में किसी बेल मे अंगूर लगेगा और न इनमें से किसी के साथ मेरी बेटी की शादी होगी। इसलिये राजा ने फ़ौरन हुक्म दे दिया और तीन अंगूर की नयी बेलें लाकर हाजिर की गई। उन बेलों पर उम्मीदवारों के नाम खोद दिये गये, ओर उन्हें राजमहल के बाग सें लगा दिया गया।
राजकुमारी हर घंटे देखती रही कि किसी बेल में फल आता है कि नहीं, पर किसी में भी फल आता हुआ दिखाई नहीं पड़ा। जब दो दिन हो गये तो राजकुमारी बहुत निराश हुई, और वह समझ गई कि इनमें से किसी में – फल नहीं आना है।
वह मन दी मन चाह रही थी कि उस गरीब नौजवान के नाम से जो बेल लगाई गई थी उसमें फल लगे जिससे कि उसके साथ शादी हो जाय।
तीसरे दिन राजकुमारी निराश होने पर भी अंगूर की बेल को देखने के लिए गई। रास्ते में वही गरीब नौजवान मिला। इस पर राजकुमारी ने यह समझा कि इतने बढ़े राजमहल में शायद यह रास्ता भूल गया है, पर गरीब नौजवान भी अंगूर की बेल देखने ही जा रहा था।
जब दोनों साथ ही साथ बेलों के पास पहुँचे तो उन्होंने देखा कि एक बेल में बढ़ा सुन्दर अंगूर लगा है। जब राजकुमारी ने यह देखा कि यह वही बेल थी जिस पर उस नौजवान का नाम लिखा था, तो वह इतनी खुश हुई कि तालियाँ पीटने लगी।
नौजवान भी आनन्द से चिल्ला पढ़ा। दोनों मिल कर राजा के पास पहुँचे। राजा इस बात पर बहुत खुश नहीं हुआ क्योंकि राजा का यह कहना था कि इतने गरीब नौजवान के साथ राजकुमारी का ब्याह हो नहीं सकता। पर वादा तो किया जा चुका था। पीछे लौटने का कोई रास्ता नहीं था।
शादी हो गई और उसके बाद वह नौजवान अपनी दुलहिन को जंगल के अन्दर एक छोटे से मकान सें ले गया। यह मकान उसे परी से मिला था। इसी छोटे-से मकान में वे लोग खुशी के साथ रहने लगे।
एक साल के अन्त में परी यह देखने के लिए निकली कि तीनों भाई किस प्रकार जीवन बिता रहे हैं।
पहले वह बडे भाई के पास गई। वहाँ उसने भिखमगिन का रूप धर कर उससे एक प्याला शर्बत माँगा। जिन दिनों वह गरीब हुआ करता था, उन दिनों उसने भिखमगिन को अपना सर्वेस्व दे दिया था, पर अब जबकि उसके पास धन ही धन था तो एक प्याला शर्बत भी नहीं दिया।
वह बोला-‘‘इसी तरह में हर एक को शर्बंत दिया करूँ, तो बस हो चुका। फिर तो में इसी काम भर का रह जाऊँगा।’’ परी लौट गई, और उसके पीठ फेरते ही वह नदी शरर्बंत की नदी से बदल कर फिर से पानी की बन गई।
बडे भाई ने देखा कि उस पर क्या विपत्ति आई है, और वह परी का खुशामद करने लगा, पर परी ने सिर हिलाते हुए कहा- ‘‘जो जिस चीज के योग्य नहीं है, उसे वह चीज नहीं मिलनी चाहिए।’’
अब परी साभले भाई के पास पहुँची। वहॉ उसने खाना माँगा। इस पर ममता भाई बोला- ‘‘मैं कभी भी मुफ्त में कुछ नहीं देता। मेरी समझ में ऐसे देने का अर्थ है आलस्य को प्रोत्साहन देना।’’
उसका ऐसा कहना था कि वह सारी खेती और भेडें सब वहाँ से गायब हो गई। सामने एक उजडा हुआ मेदान दिखाई दिया जिसमें फाख्ताएँ चुग रही थीं।
तब परी बोली-‘‘जाकर उस नाशपाती के पेड़ के नीचे बेठो, और वहाँ पर बैठ कर अपनी गलती पर गौर करो। याद रखो कि भगवान ने यदि तुम्हें किसी योग्य बनाया है तो दूसरों कि मदद करने से पीछे मत हटो।’’
अब परी तीसरे भाई के यहाँ पहुँची। जिस समय वह उसके यहाँ पहुँची, उस समय छोटा भाई अपनी दुलहिन के साथ खाना खा रहा था। भिखमंगिन को सामने देखते ही
उसे अपने पहले दिन याद आ गये और बिना कुछ कहे उसने कहा- ‘‘आओ, भीतर आओ, और हमारे साथ खाना खाओ।’’
लेकिन परी न जो दृष्टि दौड़ाई तो देखा कि वहाँ रोटियों खत्म हो चुकीं थीं, पर राजकुमारी बोली-‘‘मैं अभी और रोटी पका कर लाती हूँ। आप तब तक बैठ कर सुस्तावे। जो कुछ रूखा-सूखा घर में है में जल्द ही तैयार करके लाती हूँ।’’
राजकुमारी रोटी बनाने जुट गई ओर थोड़ी ही देर में रोटियों तैयार हो गयी। परी को भरपेट खाना खिलाया गया ओर इसके वाद जब वह जाने लगी तो राजकुमारी ने बढ़े प्रेम से कहा-‘‘माता जी आज रात को आप इधर ही ठहर जायें।’’
इस पर परी ने अपनी जादू की लकड़ी घुमाई और चारों तरफ बड़े जोर शोर से गर्जने सुनाई पड़ने लगी। डर कर छोटे भाई तथा राजकुमारी ने आँखें बन्द कर लीं ओर वह जमीन पर लेट गये। जब शोर बन्द हुआ, ओर उन्होंने आँखें खोलीं, वो देखा कि वह छोटा मकान उड़ गया ओर उसकी जगह पर एक बड़ा भारी राजमहल खड़ा है । यह राजमहल इतना बड़ा था कि राजकुमारी के पिता के पास भी इतना बढ़ा राजमहल नहीं था
अब वे उसी में चैन-सुख से रहने लगे, ओर वर्षो तक लोगों की भलाई करते रहे

He loved that pear tree very much. When the pears began to ripen, they took turns guarding them.
One or the other brother used to stay near the pear tree for a long time. While one brother was on guard, the other two brothers went to work in the fields. But even after doing more and more work, he could not feed himself in any way, even he could not get proper clothes to wear.
Once a kind angel came out of that way. He saw how nice these three boys are, yet they don't have anything good to eat, they are very poor. The fairy felt pity on this, and she started thinking that somehow these boys should be helped.
After thinking a lot, a plan came to his mind. She disguised herself as a beggar, and wriggling her way to the pear tree. When she reached there, at that time the eldest brother was guarding the tree.
The beggar said, "Let me get some pears."
The boy immediately plucked some pears, and said - "You take all the pears from my share." I cannot give you more than this because the rest of the pears belong to my brothers.
The beggar took the pears, and after blessing the elder brother went away.
The next day Sambhala Bhai was on guard of the tree. The kind fairy came again in the form of a beggar, and asked for some pears in the same way. Sabhale Bhai gave all his share of pears to the old woman. He was ready to give even more, but he did not consider it appropriate to touch the younger brother's share.
The next day in the morning the three boys were busy preparing to go to the farm, in the meantime the kind fairy in her real form flew to their grille and said - "Boys, I tested you all three, and I saw that where Till it is a matter of being kind, none of you is less than the other. I am happy for you guys. Now you guys come with me, and I will tell you how you can get good food and clothes?"
All the three brothers followed him. The kind fairy took them to a forest. The trees in that forest were so dense that even the rays of the sun could never reach the ground. Sometimes the angel took them up the mountain and sometimes they took them through the valleys, and at last they reached near a huge river, which was going towards the plains by jumping from the mountain.
When everyone came here, the angel stood up and started speaking. But there was so much noise coming from the source of the river that no one could hear a single word of his, and he went to each one and spoke in his ear.
She said to the elder boy - "Here I will give you whatever you ask for." That's why ask for a groom.
The elder brother was suffering from thirst at that time, without thinking anything he said to him – I want this whole river to become sherbet, and it should be mine.
The fairy swung her magic stick, and the mountain river turned from a foamy white body of water into a red sorbet. When this happened, the angel said - "Whatever you asked for has been fulfilled, now remember this much that you are good at it."

The elder brother remained the same. The fairy took the two younger brothers in front of a green field. There was a grassy field near that farm and there were hundreds of pigeons in it. He was busy finding crops, seeds and insects. The kind fairy said to Sanmale Bhai - "Now you can ask for a groom, but ask after thinking carefully."
The kind fairy inserted the magic stick, and it was seen that instead of pigeons, sheep were grazing there. The fairy said - "Look, that field in front is yours, these sheep are also yours." If you want you can become a good farmer, and you will not lack anything. It is in your hands to make or break your future.
After this the angel took the youngest brother and went towards the mountains. When she reached the bottom of a mountain, she asked the younger brother- "What is your desire?" Ask for whatever groom you want.
The younger brother did not answer immediately. He thought for a long time, then finally said - "I want a beautiful princess, whom I can marry."
The angel smiled at this. She said, "What you are asking for is very difficult, yet come with me, let us see what can be done."
For many days the angel roamed around taking the boy with her. Many days passed like this. At last they came to a city where a great king lived. The fairy went straight to the palace and said - "Can I meet the princess?" I heard that
The princess is very nice and beautiful, now let's see how she is.
The angel got the permission, but the younger brother was worried that I am a very simple person, how can I marry a princess. Pari said this without thinking anything.
The angel felt what the boy was thinking. She kept on encouraging him. Meanwhile, he came inside the big hall of the palace.
When he reached there, he saw that before him many other people were sitting in the candidature to marry the princess. It has come to be known that two of them are special candidates.
All the gifts and gifts brought by the bridegroom were kept in front of her. The fairy placed the Bero basket next to the things they had collected on the way.
Nothing will work out of it, there will only be laughter. But the fairy kept smiling at this, and even after refusing, she allowed the basket of berries to remain there.
Only after this there was some movement among the people of the hall, everyone stood up because at this time the king was entering that hall with the princess. A throne was kept for them on one side, they went and sat in it. When they sat down, all the three candidates stood up with their heads down.
The princess quickly discerned that although the younger brother was in tattered clothes, he looked more handsome than the other candidates, and seemed good-natured. Of the two candidates, one was middle-aged and fat, and the other was tall and lean. The princess did not like both of them. She told her father that she would like to marry the young man in tattered clothes, but the king wanted the princess to marry one of the other candidates as they were all very wealthy. But at the same time the king was very concerned about his daughter, so he did not want to hurt her. The king thought how to know which of these is the best?
When the fairy saw that the king was lying in Udhedvun, she came forward, said - "Maharaj! You settle the matter in this way. You give three new vines of grapes to plant these three in your palace. You should marry your daughter to the one whose vine bears fruit within three days of planting it.
The princess kept checking every hour whether any vine bears fruit or not, but no fruit was seen in any of them. When two days passed, the princess was very disappointed, and she understood that none of these would bear fruit.
She was desperately wishing that the vine planted in the name of that poor young man should bear fruit so that she could marry him.
On the third day, the princess went to see the grapevine even though she was disappointed. The same poor young man met on the way. On this, the princess understood that in such a big palace, perhaps this way has been forgotten, but the poor young man was also going to see the vine of grapes.
When both of them reached the vines together, they saw that a beautiful grape had grown in one of the vines. When the princess saw that it was the vine on which the young man's name was written, she was so happy that she started clapping her hands.
The young man also shouted with joy. Together they reached the king. The king was not very happy about this because the king said that the princess could not be married to such a poor young man. But the promise had been made. There was no way to turn back.
The marriage took place and after that the young man took his bride from a small house inside the forest. He got this house from an angel. They started living happily in this small house.
At the end of a year, Pari went out to see how the three brothers were living.
First she went to elder brother. There she disguised herself as a beggar and asked him for a cup of sherbet. In the days when he used to be poor, in those days he had given his all to a beggar, but now when he had only money, he did not even give a cup of sherbet.
The elder brother saw what had befallen him, and began to flatter the fairy, but the fairy shook her head and said, "One who does not deserve, should not get that."
Now Pari reached to Sahle Bhai. There he asked for food. On this Mamta Bhai said - "I never give anything for free. In my understanding, giving like this means encouraging laziness.
He had to say that all that farming and sheep all disappeared from there. A desolate field appeared in front in which pigeons were pecking.
Then the fairy said - "Go and sit under that pear tree, and sit there and consider your mistake." Remember that if God has made you capable of something, do not hold back from helping others.
Now the angel reached the third brother's place. When she reached his place, the younger brother was having dinner with his bride. On seeing the beggar in front
He remembered his first day and said without saying anything - "Come, come in, and have dinner with us."
But when the fairy looked around, she saw that the loaves had run out, but the princess said - "I will cook and bring more loaves." Till then you sit and relax. Whatever is dry and dry in the house, I will soon prepare and bring it.
The princess started making rotis and in no time the loaves were ready. The fairy was fed a lot of food and when she started leaving, the princess said with great love - "Mother, you stay here tonight."
