लोहार की बुद्धिमान लड़की
श्रीनगर में एक बहुत अमीर सौदागर रहता था। उसके पास हर प्रकार के सुख की सामग्री थी, परन्तु उसे एक बात का बढ़ा दुःख था। उसका एक ही पुत्र था, और वह भी महामुर्ख
सौदागर यह सोच-सोच कर कि उसका नालायक बेटा उसके कमाये हुए धन का नाश करेगा अत्यन्त चिन्तित रहता था। परन्तु सौदागर की पत्नी कुछ और ही सोचती थी। उसका ख्याल था कि उसका नालायक बेटा सुयोग्य पत्नी पाकर मूर्ख नहीं रह पायेगा। इसलिये वह प्रतिदिन अपने पति, सौदागर, से कहती-‘‘बेटा बढ़ा हो गया है, इसका विवाद करना चाहिए जिससे हम भी घर में एक बहू लाकर अपने जीवन के शेष दिन सुख में बिता सकें।’’
सौदागर उत्तर में कहता-‘‘विवाह करना तो ठीक है। पर क्यों किसी अबला को इस मूर्ख के पल्ले बाँधने को कहती हो। उस बेचारी का जीवन नष्ट हो जायगा। बेटा सुधर नहीं सकता। मूर्ख है ही, ओर मूर्ख रहेगा भी। हमारा नाम डुबायेगा, इसलिए मुझसे इस बारे में कुछ भी न कहा करो।’’
परन्तु पत्नी के बार-बार अनुरोध करने पर वह एक दिन राजी हो गया। पर एक शर्त तय हुईं। वह यह थी कि सोदागर मूर्ख बेटे को एक बार फिर से आजमाये। पत्नीने यह शर्तें स्वीकार कर ली।
सौदागर ने दूसरे दिन अपने पुत्र को पास बुला कर कहा-‘‘बेटा यह लो तीन पैसे। इनको लेकर बाजार जाओ। एक पैसे में अपने लिए कुछ चबेना लो। दूसरे को पानी में डाल दो। तीसरे पैसे से पाँच चीजें मोल लो, कुछ खाने की, कुछ पीने की, कुछ चबाने की, कुछ बाग में वोने की और कुछ गाय को खिलाने के लिए।’’
सौदागर का पुत्र तीन पैसे लेकर बाजार गया। पहले पैसे में अपने लिए कुछ खाने की चीजें लीं, और नदी की ओर चला। नदी पर पहुँच कर वह सोचने लगा कि पैसा तो काम की चीज है, मैं इसे नदी में क्यों फेंक दूँ, पर पिता की आज्ञा को भी तो मानना
ही है।
यह सोचते-सोचते उसने न तो नदी मै पैसा ही फेंका, और न यह सोच सका कि क्या किया जाय। वह वहीं नदी किनारे बुत की तरह खड़ा हो गया। इतने में वहाँ एक नवयुवती आई। उसने जब सौदागर-पुत्र को इस प्रकार देखा, तो पास आकर बोली- ‘‘आप क्या सोच रहे हैं?’’
सौदागर के पुत्र ने सारी बात कह सुनाई तो वह बोली-‘‘पैसा नदी में फेंकना मूर्खता है। यह तो पास रखने की चीज है, और एक पैसे में पॉच चीजें मोल लेने से तुम्हारे पिता का अर्थ है कि तुम एक तरबूज मोल ले लो। उसमे ही पांचों चीजे हैं।’’
यह नवयुवती वहॉ के लुहार की बुद्धिमान बेटी थी। सौदागर-पुत्र ने उसकी बात मान ली। वह बाजार से एक तरबूज मोल लेकर घर गया, और उसे अपने पिता के सामने रखा। उसका पिता यह देख हैरान हुआ कि उसका मूर्ख पुत्र एकदम बुद्धिमान कैसे हो गया।
इस पर उसने उससे पूछा- ‘‘बेटा सच बताओ तुम्हे यह वस्तु मोल लेने में किसने मदद दी। यह तो तुम्हारी बुद्धि से बाहर है।’’ बेटे ने झट से सारी बात कह दी।
सौदागर ने लुहार की लड़की की बुद्धिमत्ता की दाद दी, और मन में निश्चय कर लिया कि यदि बेटे का विवाह करना ही है, तो इसी लड़की से होना चाहिए। उसने यह बात अपनी पत्नी से भी कह दी। उसे भी यह बात बहुत पसन्द आई ।
दिन बीतते गये। एक दिन सौदागर लुहार के घर इस ख्याल से गया कि उसकी लड़की से बेटे के विवाह की बात पक्की कर दे। परन्तु उस समय न तो लुहार ही घर में मौजूद था, और न उसकी पत्नी ही। लुहार की बेटी ने धनवान मेहमान का सादर आसन दिया, और चाय बनाई। सौदागर ने चाय का प्याला पीते हुए कहा-बेटी तुम्हारे माता-पिता कहाँ गये हैँ ?’’
चतुर बालिका ने कहा-‘‘मेरे पिता जो तो बाजार एक कौड़ी का हीरा मोल लाने और माता जी एक के घर कुछ बातें बेचने गई है।’’
सौदागर ने लाख कोशिश की कि इस बात को समझ ले, पर समझ न सका। सो उसने फिर कहा- ‘‘बेटी, में तुम्हारा बातें नहीं समझ सका, कृपा करके मुझे समझा दो।’’
यह सुन वह बोली-‘‘मेरे पिता जी तो दिये के लिए एक कौड़ी का तेल लाने गये है। मेरी माता जी किसी का विवाह निश्चित करने के लिए गई है। वही इसका अर्थ है।’’
इतनी देर में लुहार उसकी पत्नी भी आ गई। सौदागर ने उसको अपने आने का कारण कह सुनाया। वह इस बात को मान गये और मूर्ख सौदागर-पुत्र दा विवाह चतुर लुहार-पुत्री से होना पका हो गया।
दूसरे दिन ही सारे शहर में यह खबर फैल गई कि सौदागर अपने पुत्र का विवाह एक लुहार की पुत्री से करने जा रहा है। शहर में तरह-तरह की बातें होने लगी। बहुत से दुष्टो को जलन भी हुई कि एक गरीब बाप की बेटी बढ़े सौदागर की बहु हो जायेगी ।
कुछ लोग तो इसको सहन न कर सके और एक दिन सौदागर-पुत्र से जाकर बोले-‘‘देखो जी तुमअमीर हो। इस पत्नी से, जोकि तुम जानते हो गरीब बाप की बेटी है, तुम दुख पाओ। इसलिए उसे काबू में रखने के लिए उसकी प्रतिरात जूतों से मरम्मत करते रहना, नहीं तो अन्त से वह सिर पर सवार हो जायेगी।’’
मित्रों की यह बात उस मूर्ख ने मान ली।
जब इस बात का पता लुहार को चला तो उसने अपनी पुत्री को इस बात पर मजबूर करना चाहा कि वह ऐसे मूर्ख से विवाह न करे। पर उसने कहा-‘‘मैं विवाह करूँगी और इसी सौदागर-पुत्र से ही करूँगी।’’ फिर समझा कर बोली-
‘‘आप कोई चिन्ता न करें, वह जो कुछ कहता है, वैसा कभी नहीं होगा और मैं अपनी बुद्धि से सब के जीवन को सुखी बना लूँगी।’’
कुछ दिनों बाद बड़ी धूम-धाम के साथ उनका विवाह रचा गया। पहली रात को ही मूर्ख सौदागर-पुत्र ने अपने दुष्ट मित्रों की शिक्षा पर चलने के इरादे से जूता उठा लिया और यह सोच कर कि उसकी पत्नी सोई हुई है उसने उसको जूतों से मारने की कोशिश की पर उसने हाथ पकड़ते हुए कहा-‘‘देवता, सुहागरात को ऐसा नहीं होना चाहिए यह बुरी बात है।’’
उसका पति, सौदागर-पुत्र, मान गया। इस प्रकार वह प्रतिरात उसको कुछ न कुछ कह कर टालती रही। सात दिन के बाद बहू अपने मायके चली गई। यार लोगों को जब सौदागर-पुत्र से पता चला कि उसने उनके कहने पर अमल नहीं किया है तो बोले-‘‘तुम तो डरपोक ही निकले। अब देखना तुम्हारी बीवी तुमको कैसा नाच नचायेगी।’’
बहू तो मायके आ गई, और इधर सौदागर ने अपने पुत्र को बहुत सा धन, माल, नौकर-चाकर, सवारी इत्यादि देकर बाहर के देश में व्यापार करने को भेजा। सौदागर का विचार था कि इससे उसका पुत्र कुछ तजर्बा प्राप्त करेगा।
सौदागर-पुत्र विदेश जाते हुए एक दिन एक शहर में पहुँचा। वहाँ उसने एक विशाल महल की एक खिड़की से एक सुन्दर युवत्ती को झाकते हुए देखा। महल के चारों ओर एक ऊँची दीवार थी और इसके चारो और सेब, नाशपाती और बादाम का एक बड़ा बाग था। उस सुन्दर स्त्री ने सौदागर-पुत्र को महल में आन का संकेत किया। सौदागर-पुत्र महल के अन्दर अपने सब नौकर-चाकर और माल इत्यादि लेकर गया
कुछ मीठीे-मोठी बातें करने के बाद युवती ने उसे नर्द ; काश्मीर में एक विशेष प्रकार का शतरंज खेलने को कहा। उसने खेलना स्वीकार कर लिया। पर सौदागर-पुत्र शतरंज खेलना तो जानता ही न था, और वह युवती इसमें माहिर थी। कुछ ही खेलों के बाद सौदागर-पुत्र अपना सब कुछ और अपने आपको भी हार गया।
उस युवती ने उसका माल-दौलत अपने कोष में जमा करवाया और उसको उसके नौकरों सहित जेल में बन्द कर दिया। जेल में उसके साथ बुरा व्यवहार होने लगा और वह बहुत दुबला हो गया।
जेल के सीखचों में से उसने एक दिन एक राह चलते से विनय की कि वह उसकी बात सुन ले । पथिक के यह कहने पर कि वह श्रीनगर का रहने वाला, सौदागर-पुत्र ने उसको पत्र ले जाने को कहा। पथिक ने उस पर दया करके उसको कलम, दवात और कागज लाकर दिया, और उसने दो पत्र लिख कर उसको दिये।
एक पत्र तो उसने अपने पिता को लिखा, जिसमें उसने सब हाल सच-सच लिख दिया और दूसरा अपनी पत्नी के लिए, जिसमें उसने लिखा, ‘‘मैं अब बहुत धनवान हो गया हूँ और अब जल्दी आकर तुम्हे खूब जूते मारुँगा।’’ पथिक दोनों पत्र लेकर विदा हुआ।
वह वेचारा अनपढ़ था। शहर में आकर उसने पिता के नाम का पत्र लुहार की लड़की को दिया और उसका पत्र सौदागर को। लुहार की लड़की ने पत्र देखा तो बहुत दुखित हुईं, और झट सौदागर के पास गई। उसने भी अपना पत्र दिखाया।
योग्य बहू ने सौदागर से माल-दौलत मॉग कर उसी प्रकार शहर से विदेश के लिए प्रस्थान किया और अपना रूप एक सौदागर का बना कर वह भी उसी महल के पास आई।
महल में जाकर उसने उस स्त्री को शतरंज खेलने के लिए ललकारा। युवती के नौकरों को प्रलोभन देकर उसने अपने पक्ष में पहले ही कर लिया और उस युवती के हर बार जीतने का भेद भी जान लिया।
दूसरे दिन उसने शतरंज की सब वाजियाँ जीत कर उस युवती तक को जीत लिया और उसको अपना कैदी बनाया। उसी क्षण उसने अपने पति को जेल से बहार निकलवाया और उसके कपड़े बदलवाये। पर वह उसे न पहचान सका।
अगले दिन लुहार-पुत्री ने अपने शहर के लिए प्रस्थान किया। उस हारी हुई युवती का सब माल भी ऊँटों और घोड़ों पर लाद लिया और अपने पति के जेल की पोशाक को एक सन्दूक में बन्द करवा कर उसको अपने पास ही रख लिया।
शहर से बाहर पहुँचते ही उसने अपने पति को सब माल लेकर घर जाने को कहा और बोली-‘‘आप घर जाइये और में भी जल्दी ही आपसे मिलने आता हूँ ।’’
घर लौटने पर सौदागर-पुत्र का स्वागत बहुत अच्छी तरह हुआ। उसके माता-पिता के सुख का अन्त न रहा। कुछ समय के बाद उसकी पत्नी भी वहॉ आई। मूर्ख सौदागर-पुत्र यह सोच कर कि वह अब बहुत मालदार है एकदम से उठा, अपने पॉव से जूता उतारा और अपनी पत्नी को पीटने पर उतारू हुआ। उसकी पत्नी ने उसके जेल की निशानी, कपड़ों का संदूक, जो साथ लाई थी, मॅगवाई। उसने उसका ढकन खोल कर वह कपडे निकाल कर उसको दिखाये पर मुॅह से कुछ न कहा।
सौदागर-पुत्र यह देखकर हैरान हुआ ओर सब बात समझ गया कि उसको छुड़ानेवाला उसकी बुद्धिमान पत्नी के सिवा और कोई नहीं था। वह बड़ा लज्जित हुआ, और उसने अपनी सारी कहानी कह सुनाई और उससे माफी मॉग ली। इसके बाद वह दोनो सुख से जीवन बिताने लगे।

A very rich merchant lived in Srinagar. He had the material of all kinds of happiness, but he was very sad about one thing. He had only one son, and that too a fool.
The merchant used to be very worried thinking that his unworthy son would destroy his earned money. But the merchant's wife thought otherwise. He thought that his unworthy son would not be able to remain a fool after getting a suitable wife. That's why she used to say to her husband, the merchant, every day - "The son has grown up, it should be disputed so that we can also bring a daughter-in-law in the house and spend the rest of our life in happiness."
The merchant would say in reply - "It is okay to get married. But why do you ask an able-bodied person to tie the shoulders of this fool. That poor girl's life will be destroyed. Son cannot improve. He is a fool, and will remain a fool. Our name will sink, so don't say anything to me about this.
But on the repeated requests of his wife, he agreed one day. But a condition was fixed. It was that the merchant should try the foolish son once again. The wife accepted these conditions.
The merchant called his son the next day and said, "Son, here are three paise. Take them to the market. Get yourself some munchies for a penny. Put the other one in the water. Buy five things with the third penny, some to eat, some to drink, some to chew, some to grow in the garden and some to feed the cow.
The merchant's son went to the market with three paise. First took some food items for himself with the money, and went towards the river. After reaching the river, he started thinking that money is a useful thing, why should I throw it in the river, but obey the father's orders too.

While thinking this, he neither threw the money in the river nor could think what to do. He stood there like a statue on the bank of the river. Meanwhile a young woman came there. When she saw the merchant's son like this, she came near and said - "What are you thinking?"
When the merchant's son told the whole thing, she said - "It is foolish to throw money in the river." This is a thing to keep, and by buying five things for one penny, your father means that you buy a watermelon. He alone has all the five things.
This young woman was the intelligent daughter of the blacksmith there. The merchant-son obeyed him. He went home after buying a watermelon from the market, and placed it in front of his father. His father was surprised to see how his foolish son became very intelligent.
On this she asked him- "Son, tell me the truth, who helped you to buy this thing?" This is beyond your intellect. '''''''' The son quickly told the whole thing.
The merchant praised the intelligence of the blacksmith's girl, and decided in his mind that if the son had to marry, it should be with this girl. He also told this to his wife. He also liked this very much.
Days passed by. One day the merchant went to the blacksmith's house with the intention of ensuring the marriage of his son with his daughter. But at that time neither the blacksmith nor his wife was present in the house. The blacksmith's daughter gave a respectful seat to the rich guest, and made tea. The merchant said while drinking a cup of tea, "Daughter, where have your parents gone?"
The clever girl said - "My father who has gone to the market to buy a diamond worth a penny and mother has gone to sell some things at one's house."
The merchant tried a lot to understand this, but could not understand. So he again said - "Daughter, I could not understand your words, please explain to me."
Hearing this, she said - "My father has gone to bring oil worth a penny for the lamp. My mother has gone to fix someone's marriage. That is the meaning of it.''
In the meantime, the blacksmith's wife also came. The merchant told him the reason for his arrival. He agreed to this and the marriage of the foolish merchant's son with the clever blacksmith's daughter was ripe.
The very next day the news spread throughout the city that the merchant was going to marry his son to the daughter of a blacksmith. Various things started happening in the city. Many wicked people also got jealous that the daughter of a poor father would become the daughter-in-law of a big businessman.
Some people could not tolerate this and one day went to the merchant's son and said - "Look, you are rich. You will suffer from this wife, who you know is the daughter of a poor father. That's why to keep it under control, keep repairing it with shoes every night, otherwise it will end up riding on the head.
That fool accepted the words of his friends.
When the blacksmith came to know about this, he tried to force his daughter not to marry such a fool. But she said - "I will marry and only with this merchant's son."
"Don't worry, whatever he says will never happen and I will make everyone's life happy with my intelligence."
After a few days, their marriage was solemnized with great pomp. On the first night itself, the foolish merchant's son, intending to follow the teachings of his wicked friends, picked up the shoe and, thinking that his wife was asleep, tried to hit her with the shoe, but she, holding her hand, said, "God! Honeymoon shouldn't happen like this, it's a bad thing.
Her husband, the merchant-son, agreed. In this way, every night she kept avoiding him by saying something or the other. After seven days the daughter-in-law went to her maternal home. When the people came to know from the merchant's son that he had not followed their orders, they said, "You have turned out to be a coward. Now see how your wife will make you dance.
The daughter-in-law came to her maternal home, and here the merchant sent his son to do business in a foreign country by giving him a lot of money, goods, servants, rides etc. The merchant thought that his son would get some experience from this.
The merchant's son reached a city one day while going abroad. There he saw a beautiful young woman peeping through a window of a huge palace. The palace was surrounded by a high wall and surrounded by a large orchard of apples, pears and almonds. That beautiful woman signaled the merchant-son to come to the palace. The merchant's son took all his servants and goods inside the palace.
After talking sweetly, the girl told him; Asked to play a special kind of chess in Kashmir. He accepted to play. But the merchant's son did not know how to play chess, and the girl was an expert in it. After a few games, the merchant's son lost everything and himself.
That girl deposited his wealth in her treasury and imprisoned him along with his servants. He was ill-treated in the prison and became very thin.
One day he begged a passer-by to listen to him. On the traveler saying that he was a resident of Srinagar, the merchant's son asked him to take the letter. The traveler took pity on him and brought him a pen, medicine and paper, and he wrote two letters and gave them to him.
He wrote one letter to his father, in which he wrote everything truthfully and the other to his wife, in which he wrote, "I have become very rich now and will come soon and kick you a lot." Left with both the letters.
The poor man was illiterate. Coming to the city, he gave the letter of his father's name to the blacksmith's daughter and his letter to the merchant. When the blacksmith's daughter saw the letter, she was very sad, and immediately went to the merchant. He also showed his letter.
The worthy daughter-in-law left the city for a foreign land after asking for wealth from the merchant and disguised herself as a merchant, she also came to the same palace.
Going to the palace, he challenged that woman to play chess. By tempting the servants of the girl, he had already done it in his favor and also knew the secret of winning that girl every time.
The next day he won all the games of chess and won even that girl and made her his prisoner. At that very moment she got her husband out of jail and got his clothes changed. But he could not recognize her.
The next day the blacksmith-daughter left for her city. He loaded all the goods of that defeated girl on camels and horses and kept her husband's jail dress in a box and kept it with him.
As soon as she reached out of the city, she told her husband to go home with all the goods and said- "You go home and I will also come to meet you soon."
The merchant's son was very well received on his return home. There was no end to the happiness of his parents. After some time his wife also came there. The foolish merchant's son, thinking that he was now very rich, at once got up, took off his shoe and began to beat his wife. His wife asked for his prison insignia, the chest of clothes she had brought along. He opened its cover, took out the clothes and showed it to her, but did not say anything.
The merchant's son was surprised to see this and understood everything that the one who could rescue him was none other than his intelligent wife. He was very ashamed, and he told his whole story and apologized to her. After this both of them started living happily.
